The Link Between Oral Health and Cancer

April 17th, 2014

In many of our previous blog posts the Carter Periodontics team has discussed the fact that oral health plays a significant role in the overall wellbeing of the other body systems. For instance, gum disease can lead to problems like hypertension, heart disease, and even dementia. But recently more evidence suggests a connection between pathogens in the mouth and cancer throughout the body. As a Clarksville TN dentist and periodontist, Dr. Carter and his team help patients better understand the importance of good oral hygiene.

In recent studies by Harvard and Case Western Reserve University, a bacterium commonly found in tooth plaque, called Fusobacterium nucleatum has been linked to colon cancers. Specifically, F. nucleatum is has been seen in the growth of malignant colorectal tumors. The Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology also reported that this bacterium can result in uterine infections possibly resulting in stillbirth at various stage of pregnancy.

There are also issues concerning the excessive use and build up of fluoride as well as mercury fillings. If you are think you may be at risk for any of these problems or other oral hygiene complications, you are advised to contact our Tennessee dental office as soon as possible.

Along with excellent hygiene screenings and basic dental procedures, the Carter Periodontics team, our Clarksville TN dentist, is also specially trained and experienced in gum surgery, dental implants and is among only a few dentists to conduct oral cancer screenings in TN.
