The surgery involves taking gum tissue from your palate, or another area, and using it to cover the exposed root of your tooth. There are three types of gum grafts that are most commonly performed, depending on your individual situation. Connective-tissue grafts take tissue from under a flap of skin cut on the roof of your mouth and use it to cover the exposed root. Free gingival grafts uses tissue directly from the roof of your mouth. Pedicle grafts take tissue from the gum around the tooth and stretch it down over the exposed area.
